Methodology
Dataset
NYC Open Data, DOB Sidewalk Sheds dataset (resource id 2jy7-cddj). Filtered to permit_subtype = SH with permit_status = ISSUED.
Date range
Point-in-time snapshot of currently-ISSUED permits. Permit sequence numbers reflect cumulative 90-day renewals since the shed was first permitted at that building.
Query logic
The dataset does not expose an explicit issuance date, so permit_sequence (the DOB renewal counter) is used as an age proxy. Each renewal covers a 90-day window under Local Law 48 rules, so a currently-ISSUED permit at sequence N represents approximately N times 90 days on site. Results are deduplicated by address so a single building appears at most once, keyed on the highest sequence.
Exclusions
Permits outside the sidewalk shed subtype, permits not currently ISSUED, permits with a non-numeric sequence value, and duplicate address rows with lower sequence.
